Founded in 2021 by JJ Bower, a passionate musician and coffee enthusiast, Instrumental Coffee was born out of love, dedication, and a desire to serve the community.

JJ's journey with coffee began as a hobby in his garage in 2016, much like how he started drumming in his garage back in the late 1980s. With a background that began as a dishwasher and busboy in his teenage years, he climbed the ranks in the restaurant and coffee industries, reaching the executive level. However, the instability brought by the COVID-19 pandemic cast a shadow over his career and quality of life.

Determined to pursue his passion and serve his beloved Thoroughgood Neighborhood and the greater Hampton Roads area, JJ and his wife, Luisa, took a leap of faith and launched Instrumental Coffee.

Instrumental Coffee's mission is simple: to provide fresh-roasted coffee to the community in a kind, knowledgeable, and approachable manner with a solid commitment to consistency and customer service.

JJ and Luisa's journey began in Athens, GA, where they bonded over their love for local coffee shops. From Espresso Royale to Jittery Joes, they cherished these experiences. Their coffee exploration continued after their move to Los Angeles with favorite spots like Cafecito Organico and Intelligentsia. They moved to Virginia Beach in 2014, and JJ embarked on his coffee roasting adventure.

At Instrumental Coffee, quality takes precedence. The selection of coffee beans is intentionally small, and daily inventory is limited to ensure the freshest coffee possible. The signature Guatemalan medium roast stands out alongside Brazilian medium and dark roasts, and a Colombian decaffeinated option.

But Instrumental Coffee is more than just beans; it's an experience. Our full-service coffee and espresso bar, housed in a mobile trailer, serves coffee, cold brew, and espresso drinks crafted from JJ's roasted beans.

You can find the Instrumental Coffee Trailer in The Thoroughgood Shopping Center parking lot on weekdays from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. We also make appearances at the King's Grant Farmers Market in Virginia Beach and 2nd Sundays in Williamsburg, VA.

The cozy Instrumental Coffee roasting shop is more than a roastery; it's a musical haven. Inspired by JJ's background as a working drummer, our merchandise and branding have a vibrant rock & roll vibe. Step inside, and you'll be immersed in music with a vintage entertainment system that showcases vinyl records, CD's, DVD's, VHS tapes, and even offers a retro video game system.
